A commuter town around a great common
Harpenden is built around its common, with Victorian and Edwardian villas, Arts & Crafts houses and a busy High Street, and fast Thameslink trains into London.
It’s also home to Rothamsted, one of the oldest agricultural research stations in the world. Many of its houses have been extended and remodelled, often with large aluminium glazing, rooflights and new bathrooms.
With finishes at this level, the sealant has to be just as good: straight, even and in exactly the right colour.

Large aluminium frames and bi-folds
The same skills we use on commercial curtain walling apply to big domestic glazing: correct joint depth, compatible products, clean surfaces and a colour that matches the frame.
- Bi-folds, sliders and glazed gables
- Backer rod to control depth
- Anthracite, black or grey to match frames
- Clean, masked lines inside and out

Harpenden sealant questions
Can you seal large aluminium glazing and bi-fold doors?
Yes. Large aluminium frames move a lot with temperature, so we use a low-modulus sealant, set the joint depth with backer rod and match the colour to the frames, usually anthracite, black or grey.
We’re having an extension built. When should the sealant go in?
Externally, once the frames are fitted and the brick, render or cladding round them is finished. Internally, after the tiling and joinery are done. We’re happy to work to your builder’s programme.
Do you cover Redbourn and Wheathampstead?
Yes. Redbourn, Wheathampstead, Kimpton, Flamstead and Hatching Green are all covered from our Harpenden page.
